The Lovers (1923)
Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)
National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.
When people think of Picasso, they often imagin his portraits with noses and mouths jutting in odd directions (Cubism). But Picasso was a man of mercurial mood and his style could change, literally, overnight. And it was usually a woman that set him off.
"The Lovers" is a very theaterical scene painted during Picasso's infatuation with Olga Kokhlova, a sophisticated Russian ballerina. In a whirlwind romance, he swept her off pointe
and to the alter. But, the fickle fellow quickly grew bored
with her elegant world. So...he dumped her, moved on,
and his painting style changed again.
At least the romance inspired this beautiful painting...
...and AR's nose and lovely mouth are all in the right places.
