Not At Home (1879)
Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912)
Walters Art Museum, Baltimore (not confirmed)
Those daring Victorians adored Alma-Tadema's paintings of romantic scenes and semi-nudes. But, when the artist exhibited a full-frontal nude painting entitled, Sculptor's Model
all those open minds snapped shut.
So, the artist (who enjoyed a very comfortable life in London's Regent's Park made possible by his success) returned to the chaste, Old World images that made him famous. His work became SO famous that Hollywood used his paintings as models for classic film sets and costumes for decades.
Like the suitor in this painting, AR's characters often pop in unexpectedly (Truly, Madly, Deeply, Dogma) or as unwelcome guests (The Barchester Chronicles, Judas Kiss). But who cares if the man was unexpected? What's wrong with these women?
Let him in! Let him in!
