Birthday (1915)
Marc Chagall (1887-1985)
Museum of Modern Art, New York City
I love Chagall! He paints my dreams: sometimes lovely and witty...sometimes just a little creepy.
In this lovely painting, the woman is making a birthday meal when her lover arrives. Is he head-over-heels in love?
Is he bending over backwards to please? Is he so happy that he's floating on air? Is he double jointed -- which promises a very exciting evening ahead?
Experts believe this
painting is a self-portrait of himself
and his beloved wife, Bella.
A Russian Jew, Chagall and Bella fled the Nazi occupation of Paris and moved to the United States in 1941. When Bella died a few years later, he returned to France, remarried and doubled his efforts, embracing the art of stained glass, sculptures and ceramics. With child-like whimsy, Chagall's work glows in
vibrant colors and fills every inch of the canvas.
He
lived a passion-filled life to the age of 98.
