After the Storm (date unknown)
Virginia Demont-Breton (1859-1935)
Private Collection
Demont-Breton was the daughter of one artist and the wife of another. Yet, neither man could equal the powerful images she painted of the rugged coastline of Wissart, a small French fishing village. Demont-Breton loved the stoic fishing families
and shared their lives.
Through her paintings, we can catch a glimpse of their lives too. When a child was born, Demont-Breton was the first to visit. When a ship sank, she grieved for those who died. She even founded a relief society for the widows and
children of the men lost at sea.
Born in England, Demont-Breton was only the second woman
to receive the Cross of the Legion of Honor.
