In the Studio (1881)
Marie Bashkirtseff (1860-1884)
Dnipropetrovsk State Art Museum, Ukraine
"Let us love dogs, let us love only dogs!
Men and cats are unworthy creatures."
Strikingly
beautiful, Bashkirtseff was a painter, singer and writer. She kept a
revealing diary that actually remains in print today,
produced an astonishing number of paintings, was a desired woman of intellect...and died at age 25. Sadly, many of her works were destroyed in bombings of WWII.
Bashkirtseff studied at the Acadmie Julian, the only art school at that time open to women. This painting captures what the classroom was like the young, wealthy women who could afford to travel to the school from all around the world.
Hmmm...why didn't the models look like this
when I was in art school?
