Adam and Eve (1932)
Tamara De Lempicka (1898 - 1980)
Petit Palais, Geneva
"I live life in the margins of society. And the rules of normal society don't apply in the margins."
Yes, the beautiful Lempicka made her own rules. Born to a wealthy family in Warsaw, at 16 she attended a ball in
St. Petersburg -- with two geese on ribbon leashes -- and caught the eye of playboy, Tadeusz Lempicka. They fled the Russian Revolution and arrived penniless in Paris. She began painting
and soon made a name in the Art Deco movement.
Her use of sharp edges (Soft Cubism) and deep colors made her
a popular portrait artist of the rich.
Lempicka left her husband and dived into the scene of '20s Paris, having affairs with men and women. When she married Baron Raoul Kuffner in 1933, they moved to America where
Hollywood welcomed her with open arms (she was often mistaken for Greta Garbo).
Critics now consider her works an "early protest against the denial of female sexuality." *snort* A man must have said that. I personally don't think Lempicka had time to consciously protest a woman's role in society. She was too busy living life and making her own rules. In 1980, Lempicka died in her sleep in Mexico and her ashes were scattered overr the Popocateptl volcano.
Please stop looking at AR's bum. You know that's not really his bottom. It's part of the painting. Instead, look at how AR's classic profile fits perfectly into this Art Deco work...
STOP looking at his bum!!
