Hylas and the Nymphs (1896)
John William Waterhouse (1849-1917)
Manchester City Art Gallery, Manchester, UK
Waterhouse made a good living as an artist but, for some reason, the tightwad painted on cheap, crooked, damaged canvases. Before an exhibit, he could slap on thick layers of paint without giving it enough time to dry. Sadly, that is why many of his works are so cracked and cockeyed today.
In this Greek myth, Hylas was the arms bearer, and lover, of the mighty Hercules during the adventureof the Argonauts. Hyles went ashore to fetch water and was lured away by a flock of lusty nymphs. A heartbroken Herc searched for his lover in vain, for it seemed that Hylas preferred a handful of wet nymphs to a burly demigod. Go figure...
And AR asked, "What? All of you at once?"
