Nighthawks (1942)
Edward Hopper (1882-1967)
Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois
Yes, his art captured modern America, but Hopper always insisted that he just tried to paint himself. An awkward kid (over 6' tall by age 12), he felt isolated and lonely -- a theme he painted
over and over. He carried that frustration into a stormy,
43-year marriage to fellow artist Josephine Nivison
(check out her diaries - they're fascinating!).
Nighthawks portrays customers in an all-night cafe'. The people are huddled in the stark light, attempting to escape the darkness. So primal...you can image humans throughout the history doing the same thing: huddled around a primitive fire, seeking
comfort from the dark.
