Our seaman has such an arched, plotting brow...
If the homely girl in the center doesn't step out of the way,
he may tip her overboard so he can reach
the object of his affection.

Some experts suggest that "Calcutta" is a pun on "Quel cul tu as".
The polite translation: " What a nice bottom you have."
Sigh...if only big bottoms would come back in fashion.
Tissot lets us spy on flirtation. However, he did not paint Valentines. His affairs are filled with tension, rivalries, indifference or *cough* impure thoughts, along with a bevy of fashionable women. Serious critics sniffed that Tissot's work was "vulgar" -- and considering the prudish Victorian ethics
of the time, they had a point -- but the public
adored his lovely, teasing paintings.

In 1882, Tissot's mistress and frequent model, Kathleen Newton, committed suicide in the late stages of tuberculosis. She was 28. Heartbroken, Tissot tried to contact her spirit through elaborate seances before turning to Christianity. He spent the rest of his life illustrating the Old Testament of the Bible.
